ICE at Airports
Many Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers have gone unpaid since Feb. 14, which is when the partial government shutdown occurred, according to Axios. Some of these workers have decided to quit and look for other jobs or simply stay home, causing a new issue: the TSA staffing crisis. This has led to flight delays and unusually long lines at airports. As a result, ICE agents have been brought in to assist the remaining TSA workers, causing the general public to have mixed feelings. Some travelers have noticed that ICE agents’ help has caused wait times to grow shorter. But many are beginning to fear and avoid airports altogether, especially due to the reported deportations occurring at airports such as the San Francisco National Airport and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
No Kings Protest
On Saturday, March 28, the ‘No Kings’ Protest took place in many populous U.S cities, such as Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and more. Across the country, thousands of protesters voiced their disapproval of the Trump Administration and more specifically, the involvement of ICE and the war between the U.S, Israel and Iran. The protest was organized by an anti-authoritarianism organization known as Indivisible. This rally marks the third major ‘No Kings’ protest. It is estimated that seven to nine million protesters attended the ‘No Kings’ protest nationally, making it the biggest single-day protest in the U.S.
United Nations Aid in the Middle East
Tensions have been high in the Middle East with the U.S-Israeli war with Iran, the Israel-Gaza conflict and now, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. All of these conflicts – especially the closure of Strait of Hormuz – have resulted in the disruptions of Humanitarian Supply Lines in the Middle East. The United Nations warns that humanitarian aid is directly at risk, which threatens emergency relief, food and medical items for millions in need. This week, according to Reuters, the UN has brought up two initiatives to combat this approaching crisis: the appointment of a Task Force on the Strait of Hormuz and the appointment of an experienced envoy in order to expedite UN peace efforts.
