Drops of News: What Happened Last Week?

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that started on April 16 has brought a significant reduction in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese armed group, though both sides have continued to fire at each other. Israeli troops are operating inside a ribbon of Lebanese territory, labeled a buffer zone, that residents have been warned not to return to.

White House Correspondents’ Dinner

On Saturday, April 25, at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C., the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was held to celebrate press freedom and the First Amendment, bringing together journalists, politicians and celebrities.

It was abruptly disrupted Saturday night when President Trump and other administration officials were escorted from the room after an individual started firing a weapon. Secret Service agents swarmed the room, where some reporters and administration officials ducked under tables amidst the disruption. The event was suspended as authorities investigated the incident.

The suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun and knives. Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, CA, and he was reported to have approached a security checkpoint armed and opened fire. In a manifesto written by Allen, it outlined a plan to target administration officials, which was sent to family members before the attack.

Allen will be put on trial in federal court on Monday, being charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and with assault of a federal officer using weapons. Additional charges are expected, according to U.S. Attorney for D.C., Jeanine Pirro.

The incident forced the cancellation of the dinner, and it will be rescheduled for a later date.

Israeli Strikes in Lebanon

On Sunday, April 26, Israeli strikes killed 14 people and wounded 37 people in southern Lebanon, marking the deadliest day since a ceasefire began on April 16. The casualties included two women and two children.

A spokesperson for the Israeli military said in an X statement that Hezbollah, a Lebanese armed group, was violating the ceasefire and that Israel would act against it. They warned people to head north and west, staying away from north of the Litati River and the zone in southern Lebanon. These towns are occupied by Israeli troops and, despite a ceasefire, have continued military operations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting in Jerusalem that they are acting in the security of Israel, the soldiers and the community. However, Hezbollah said that it would not stop its attacks on Israeli troops inside Lebanon and its towns in northern Israel as long as Israel continued its ceasefire infringements.

Iran’s Proposal of the Strait of Hormuz

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated further as the U.S. continues to enforce a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz after beginning the blockade on April 13. What began as a blockade of Iranian ports over ten days ago has expanded globally, with every Iranian ship being monitored by the U.S. naval forces throughout its voyage.

As crude oil and petroleum are Iran’s primary sources of foreign currency, the country could be forced to cut production if Iran cannot move the millions of oil barrels it produces daily. Iran could sustain the current oil production for two to three months before the storage issues become challenging.

On Sunday, April 26, Iran gave the U.S. a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, with nuclear negotiations being postponed for a later stage, a U.S. official found. On Monday, April 27, Trump is expected to hold a situation room meeting on Iran with his national security and foreign policy team to review actions to take going forward.
