Super Bowl LX

On Sunday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m., the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots faced off against each other in Super Bowl LX. Controversy has spread over the subject of the halftime show. Bad Bunny—a Puerto Rican rapper and singer who has continuously announced his disapproval of anti-immigration policies—was set to perform. Consequently, some were unhappy about this artist performing, primarily conservatives. As a result, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), known for advocating for conservative politics, hosted a separate halftime show featuring Kid Rock and other artists. White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested that President Donald Trump tuned in to the TPUSA halftime show instead of the Super Bowl halftime show, but it was not confirmed.

Trump Posts Racist Video

Earlier this week, President Trump posted a video on Truth Social, which contained a depiction of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes while the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” played in the background. The video preceding the AI-generated clip contained allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 elections by the Democratic Party. Following the release of the post, the Trump Administration received a heavy amount of backlash from multiple news outlets across the world, causing President Trump to delete the post. The next day, in a press interview, President Trump stated that he would not apologize for the depictions of the two former officials and that his team made a simple mistake.

Ghislane Maxwell Testifying

On Feb. 9, Ghislaine Maxwell, an associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is set to testify on the handling of the Epstein files by the FBI. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for the abuse and trafficking of underage individuals. Her lawyers have previously stated that Maxwell will be invoking her 5th Amendment right to not answer any questions unless she is granted legal immunity from any potential statements. Although this request was made by her legal counsel, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee declined and filed a subpoena for Maxwell to testify from her own jail cell. The committee does not have the authority to restrict Maxwell from her 5th Amendment right to silence, but still summons her to testify.
