December 23, 2015, when my sister, Grace and I were eight years old, it was our fifth year of decorating gingerbread houses.

Gingerbread Houses: Making memories around the holidays

One of the more special gingerbread houses that we’ve made was in 2017 which is a lighthouse that is decorated with a variety of candies such as gumdrops, Hershey’s Kisses and wafers.

Instead of doing the original gingerbread house, in 2019, I decided to do a chocolate gingerbread house using candies such as Oreos, wafers, gumdrops, marshmallows and sprinkles.

In 2021, I created a mansion gingerbread house that I decorated with wafers, pretzels, M&Ms, skittles and marshmallows. One of the spaces of the house that I enjoy decorating is the yard. For example, I added a pond to the yard which was made from wafers and marshmallows and a wafer fence to the backyard of my house.

A cereal that works well for the roof of the house is Shredded Wheat, perfect for a snowy effect. There are also windows made from Golden Grahams and a path made from honeycomb cookies.

Another cereal that works well for gingerbread houses is Golden Grahams which are added to be a more traditional shingle-looking roof along with Lifesavers, gumdrops, marshmallows and a Hershey’s Kiss chimney.

In 2020, my sister, Grace and I decided to create rowhouse gingerbread houses. Mine was decorated with peppermints, gummies, M&Ms, holiday pasta, marshmallows and a Hershey’s Kiss chimney on top of each row house. The rowhouses not only were more time consuming, but were a unique style of house to decorate, which I loved. In the backyard of the house, I added a table, marshmallow igloo, and a canal made from blue sprinkles and M&Ms to make the house’s setting feel like the Netherlands.

In 2018, our houses were more simple, but still creative and colorful. One of the house’s roofs was decorated with candies like gumdrops, sprinkles and Skittles. The Christmas Tree Peeps was a nice addition to the front of the house and are a great candy to use around a gingerbread house.

One of the most unique gingerbread houses that we’ve made is the Eiffel Tower gingerbread house that my sister, Grace, made in 2022. It isn’t a traditional gingerbread house, so the decoration for the house was different from what we’ve done in the past. She decorated with candies like chocolate Teddy Bears, sprinkles, hard candies, pretzels and a Hershey’s Kiss on top. She also created the Seine River using blue icing and sprinkles and created a wafer boat and a gummy raft.

One notable gingerbread house that we made was a beach gingerbread house. The roof was decorated with candies like M&MS, Golden Grahams, sprinkles and peppermints. Unlike the traditional coconut snow that we use to finish off our gingerbread houses, crushed Graham crackers were used as sand and blue icing was used as water to help turn the gingerbread house into a beach house. In addition, a palm tree cookie was added for the palm tree and pretzels created a path to the beach house.

The distinctive Hewn Bakery sign and logo enhance the store front’s window. Hewn Bakery, a female owned and operated business, opened their second location in Libertyville in early Jan., 2023. The bakery specializes in bread and was named one of the best bakeries in the U.S. by Food & Wine Magazine.
