Senior Elias Anderson, who plans on majoring and minoring in music at Valparaiso University, mentioned that his interest in studying music after high school stemmed from his experiences in the LHS pit orchestra.

Kate Speer is one of the few senior students planning to study visual or physical arts in college. Speer plans to study apparel design and merchandising at the University of Minnesota

The boys train six times a week both before and after school. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had the amount of talent we have this year” stated assistant coach and LHS math teacher John Taylor.

Ranked first in state prior to sectionals, the LHS boys gymnastics team has had great success this season, they competed in the state competition on May 10th-11th. (scores pending)

LHS hosts Life After Libertyville; A College Workshop for Sophomores and Parents

The club can be found up the stairs in the fieldhouse supply closet. Its secluded spot makes it an ideal hangout spot for the members, they say.

The club provides students with the opportunity to get to know Adobe software programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Audio Audition, which are used for video editing and sound mixing.

One of the recent additions to their equipment was a drone, the club has plans for it’s use in the future.

Members of WIldcat Productions take part in recording and editing footage for sports games, plays and other school events. The students share a common interest in technology and filmmaking.

Sophomore Emma Bleck (left) claims her style is inspired by her siblings and family because they have an appreciation for the arts. Senior Jay McClendon (middle) has a decade-based style, stemming mostly from the ‘90s and the neutral colors from that decade. Junior Alex Tang (right) is recognized by his fellow classmates for dressing up on the daily. He claims his style to be preppy but casual.

Senior Greta Dean describes her style as trendy; she shops six months before the season to familiarize herself with the trends ahead of time. Senior Ethan Nier (middle) takes his style from their passion for hockey. He made a decision in sixth grade to start wearing one hockey jersey a day. Sophomore Luke Niemann (right) has numerous inspirations for his style. It comes from his love of music, certain bands, skateboarding, siblings and stores like Goodwill and Old Navy.

“These seven students are recognized amongst LHS classmates for having a unique, eye-catching style. They take their styles from different decades, nationalities and trends and commit to them on a near daily basis.

Senior Zach El Ghatit wants to go into politics because “it’s a really interesting facet of our society, and [he wants] to make a difference.” His interest in politics began around the first election of former President Barack Obama.

Senior Annika Larson goes by Anni, pronounced “ON-knee.” The name Annika means “grace” in Swedish.

In Gujarati, Pavan means “wind.” Sophomore Pavan Acharya’s siblings all have names with Gujarati meanings, a language spoken by his family in India.

Freshman Kajsa Murphy’s name means “pure” in Swedish and is mispronounced almost every time she meets someone new.

Sophomore Kathleen Jin’s given birth name is Yinghao, a Chinese name with a meaning that is not easily translated into English. The biggest issue she stumbles upon with her name is when substitutes call out attendance and use the name “Yinghao” instead of “Kathleen.”

Senior Angad Virk’s name translates to “of my own body” in Sanskrit, referring to being a part of God. His name gets mispronounced often, but he is understanding of it.

Senior Anniina Walquist has a common Finnish name, however, here in Libertyville, her name is considered to be more unique: “I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Walquist explained.

Numerous department stores around the area have been closing down this year. Sears, one of the main anchors of Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills, closed because it was unable to compete with the lower prices in stores such as Walmart and they struggled as customers began to prefer online shopping over going to a physical store.

Patrol Officer James Davis’ job is to protect and serve the community. He has physically saved four lives during his time working in the Libertyville police department.

For the show, theater kids from around Libertyville auditioned for the role of Catherine’s son, Theo; 11-year-old Billy Sims from Oak Grove Middle School was casted. Theo and Catherine influenced Pippin’s decision to choose family and love as his life’s fulfillment. At the end, Theo decides it’s his turn to find his life’s purpose.

Dr. Tom Koulentes opened up the discussion addressing his time spent at LHS and his disappointment with the seniors’ first day senior shirt decision. Every year, senior students show up on the first day with phrases on their shirts regarding usage of alcohol. This year’s shirts read “Less Thinking, More Drinking.”

The new Drop-in Lab is also bigger and more accommodating to a larger number of students than the previous location. With a growing number of resource areas, more and more students are able to take advantage of these and potentially reduce the amount of work they have to do at home.

For the final day of Writers Week, a Chicago-based blues musician by the name of Fruteland Jackson shared his knowledge about the history and making of blues music. The day also included acts from LHS student band Fun Monkey and Sneezy, a band made up of former LHS students.

Junior Wesley Werden performed the “Pommel Faber” a move where the gymnast scissors and circles their legs around the Pommel horse. Werden finished the night off by placing first on floor and first all around for the meet.
