Junior Danny Pucino and senior Michael Gunther have been wrestling together ever since they were five-years-old. These seasoned athletes will continue their sports careers together wrestling for the Division I team at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

The four days of Writers Week are packed with poems, stories, comedy, music and so much more. This is when students and professionals take the stage to share their hard work with the Libertyville High School community.

LHS celebrates creativity at Writers Week

The halls were buzzing with talk about one of Thursday’s performers, Tim “Toaster” Henderson. Students described him as “woke” and “hilarious.” “Toaster” is an amusing performance poet who travels around the country to share his work, which focuses on race, with teenagers.

Libertyville High School’s own: A group of talented sophomores have gotten together to share their music. This band impressed the audience with their musicality.

Daphne Willis does it all. She is signed to one the biggest recording studios, Sony Records. She performs live, but her music can be also found on Spotify, Apple Music, or even in other platforms, such as Jennifer Lopez’s new movie “Second Act.” Willis writes for other artists as well, or with them, as she co-wrote her song “Done with Being Done” with Meghan Trainor.

Senior Emili Ford shared her impressive writing that she had earlier prepared for her final Writers Week at Libertyville High School.

LHS science teacher Mrs. Suzanne Torrence presented an impromptu short story that she had written during the 40-minute period in which she was presenting, following the guidelines of a few words given to her by students in the audience.

In the game of “Two Truths and a Lie,” Mr. Helvie told a true story about his experience dressing up as “The Little People” for a job he had when he was younger.

Ms. Dyan Naslund took part in a game called “Two Truths and a Lie,” where she and two other LHS staff members -- Dr. Brenda Nelson and Mr. Dustin Helvie -- told stories. One of these three were made up; in this instance, Ms. Naslund was faking it.

On the second day of Writers Week, there were many different LHS staff members who participated on stage. Mr. Kevin O’Neill and Mr. David Kreutz both wrote short stories on the spot, incorporating three words given to them by their audience.

A professional poet, Derrick Brown, shared his creative writing process with Libertyville High School. He is the founder of Write Bloody Publishing and has written several poetry books himself.

Mitchie Main is a senior at LHS who prepared a poem for the 2019 Writers Week and confidently presented her work to other students and faculty in the audience.

Brian Quijada is a playwright, musician, actor and a solo performer who specializes in looping, a repetition of short sections of music that create a beat, to make his poetry into music.

For 13 years Mr. Bernarve Ramirez has been at LHS where he works hard and enjoys making jokes, working with his peers and seeing the students around school. This job is most important to Mr. Ramirez because he is able to provide for his four kids.

Mr. Ron Curtis has been on the Building and Ground staff here at LHS for 27 years. Although he has the most experience with maintenance and plumbing, he enjoys the unpredictability of his job.

Its good to know where you are when going to a big festival in order to be knowledgeable of where the security is and what to do in case you find yourself in a dangerous situation. The Millennium Park stage hosts many big festivals each year, including the Chicago Blues Festival.
