Girls basketball wins first game of Buffalo Grove Tournament

Libertyville’s girls basketball team was king of the court on Tuesday, Nov. 26, as they defeated Crystal Lake Central High School by a score of 59-23 in the West Gym in their first game of the Buffalo Grove Tournament.

After winning the tipoff to start the game, Libertyville had a strong offensive performance led by senior Lydia Crow. Lydia sparked the offense by making three three-pointers within the game’s first quarter. Crow would go on to score 16 points for Libertyville. Libertyville also saw strong performances from seniors Margaret Buchert and Abigail Frea; each scored 6 points.

Another standout performer for Libertyville was Lauren Huber. While Crow dominated beyond the three-point arc, Huber took charge in the paint by converting offensive rebounds into Libertyville points. Huber scored 9 points while also having 11 rebounds.

In addition to an excellent offense, Libertyville showcased a lockdown defense as well. The Libertyville defense continuously put pressure on Crystal Lake Central’s ball-handlers. This pressure led to many turnovers on the Crystal Lake side, and Libertyville racked up 21 steals. Many of these turnovers were converted into Libertyville points.

Though Crystal Lake Central’s offense showed signs of awakening late in the game, Libertyville would go on to easily win this very one-sided affair.

Libertyville’s success in this game led to another victory on Friday, Nov. 29, over Maine South, by a score of 51-29. However, on Saturday, Nov. 30, they lost to Hersey by a score of 61-48; this concluded Libertyville’s run in the Buffalo Grove Tournament.

The team will begin conference play this Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Lake Forest High School.
