Libertyville High School’s 100th Homecoming took place on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Ms. Andrea Lara, the head advisor of Student Council, helps the Student Council students plan Homecoming. However, most of the planning comes from the students, she said.

This year’s Homecoming theme was the Centennial, celebrating 100 years of Libertyville High School. Every grade had a different theme, too. Student Council members chose what decade would be their grade’s theme. The seniors wear the 1980s, the juniors wear the 1970s, the sophomores chose the 1950s, and the freshmen wear the 1960s.

The decisions of Homecoming mostly fall onto the Student Council leaders. This includes the week of Homecoming itself, known as spirit week. Members of Student Council came up with dress-up ideas and then came together and voted.

This year’s spirit week included denim day, tie-dye, orange and black, 1980s/neon, and color wars. Every grade had a different color for color wars. Freshmen were green; sophomores were red; juniors had purple; and seniors had blue.

Sadie Eyre, a junior on Student Council, helped to make a float, decorate the hallways and think of ideas for spirit week.

Student Council also made a float for the Homecoming Parade. The parade took place on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 7, before the dance. Each grade worked on a different float associated with its assigned decade.

“The juniors killed it this year and that’s why they won the best float,” Eyre said. Their float was a stage and the students dressed up as famous musicians from the 1970s with blow up guitars and microphones.

Student Council members started working on the float the week before the dance. Before they decorated the float, they made decorations for the hallways.

Although it took two or three hours, Eyre said that while decorating the hallways, they “crank it out and when you look, everyone has a different job and everyone is going crazy.” Other students not on Student Council were allowed to join the fun as well.

Some of the seniors, such as Mary Cate Buchert and Charlie Bloom, focused on movies made during the 1980s. Buchert drew a picture of “Back to the Future” and Bloom painted a picture of “E.T.”

The juniors decorated their part of the hallway with bright colors, afros and disco balls.

The sophomores’ hallway was filled with checkered paper, CDs, jukeboxes and poodle skirts.

The freshmen followed a similar path for the 1960s, with CDs, peace signs and flowers decorating the hallway.
