Writers Expo Showcases the Power of Words in its 15th Anniversary Event

Children’s book author Malcolm Newsome, from Waukegan and author of four picture books and counting, speaks about the power of choosing words to shape reality and tackle challenges. His first picture book, “Dear Star Baby,” released in 2023, explores the topic of pregnancy loss and helping families overcome it. In addition to writing, Newsome works in cybersecurity, showing how the “power of will” can lead to an important impact.

From Thursday to Friday, March 12-13, students and staff showcased their passion for writing at the school’s annual Writers Expo. 2026 marked the 15th annual event and doubled the number of student participants from last year. Students had the chance to hear their teachers share writing and songwriting, professionals who incorporate writing into their work and their fellow classmates’ work.
