Boys volleyball comes back to win over New Trier Trevians

Senior Aleks Slesers (6) jumps up to smash a shot into the backline of New Trier’s defense.

The Libertyville boys volleyball team fought hard to close out a 25-23 victory in their third set against New Trier on Monday, Mar. 20, 2023. This game marked the first win of their season and served to show how resilient the Wildcats are.
New Trier dominated the first set, winning 25-17 and proving they were a formidable team. Despite this shaky start, the players didn’t give up or lose confidence.
“We have three great captains [that] do a good job keeping the players positive,” said head coach Jennifer Smith. “They stay [strong], even if we are losing points.”
The Wildcats gained footing halfway into the second set, beginning a comeback against New Trier.
“It was very frustrating for [New Trier], who are used to terminating other teams, and getting kills,” Smith mentioned. “We just kept giving the ball back, and I think we frustrated them enough to gain that lead.”
The Wildcats continued this momentum, winning 25-23 in the second set and finishing with the same score to win in the third. Their synergy and positive team culture led to an exceptional performance and secured the win.
“We were behind the whole way,” stated Smith, “but we kind of just never gave up on defense. We just kept the ball alive.”
