Opening the concert with a bang, the Jazz Lab Band took the stage and performed five different tunes.

The Jazz Lab Band is conducted by Mr. Dave Ness, who also teaches guitar classes at LHS.

The second group to play was the Jazz Ensemble, which is conducted by Mr. Matt Karnstedt and is the more advanced of the two bands.

The Jazz Ensemble performed six different, unique pieces. Standing toward the middle of the photo is junior Jake Short soloing on the bass trombone.

Freshman Gavin Johnson played a lively marimba solo during “Michelangelo” by Astor Piazzola and arranged by Fred Sturm.

Duke Ellington’s “Concerto for Cootie” starred senior Annalisa Waddick. The piece called for the use of an array of different mutes, each creating a different effect on the sounds of the trumpet.

Jack Govern, junior, took a solo on the tenor saxophone. Also pictured are (from left) Nate Rezell on string bass, Thomas Power on guitar and Alex Tang on alto saxophone.

Senior David Lee, one of the winners of the 2018-2019 Concerto Competition, performed the Artie Shaw “Clarinet Concerto.” It was accompanied by members of the Chamber Orchestra, in addition to the Jazz Ensemble. The piece featured jazz techniques including scooping, glissandos, vibrato and swing rhythms.

During the last song of the night -- the famous “Sing, Sing, Sing” by Louis Prima and arranged by Gordon Goodwin -- junior Allen Liu stood and played a smooth solo on the tenor saxophone.

In the past four months, many car break-ins have occurred, some being reported via Libertyville Facebook groups. In August, a Libertyville ice cream shop was robbed as well, by a man in a green morph suit.
