On Friday, September 26th, the Libertyville Varsity football team secured their second win of the season against conference rival Mundelein. The Wildcats came out on top over the Mustangs with a score of 17-7.
Mundelein won the coin toss so they elected to defer to the 2nd half and go on defense to start the game. The Wildcats took the opportunity to receive and capitalized on it with a 71 yard opening drive ending with a Brady Buenik (10) rushing touchdown.
On just the second play of the first offensive possession for the Mustangs, cornerback Payton Sheridan (36) intercepted a pass from Mundelein quarterback Logan Young (17) cutting the Mustang drive short.
The game was scoreless up until about 9 minutes in the first half when Jack Zaban (23) hit a school record 57 yard field goal to put the Cats up 10-0.
To cap off the first half of the game, Libertyville drove down the field 58 yards including a 12 yard dumpoff pass to Gavin Dickson (4) thrown by quarterback Trevor Wallace (2) with 40 seconds left in the half to make the score 17-0.
It was clear the Wildcats wanted to come out more aggressive to get themselves back on track following the three game stretch of losses.
Coming out of halftime, the Libertyville defense made it evident that they were not going to let up on the Mundelein Mustang offense by forcing a three and out after the kickoff.
Mundelein remained stagnant until about 3 minutes left in regulation when quarterback Logan Young (17) tossed one up to the endzone to wide receiver Cameron Earing (4). Earing made an incredible play on the ball and was able to haul in the touchdown in the back of the endzone.
With just over two minutes left in the game, the Mustangs went for an onside kick and against all odds recovered the football just outside the redzone on the 23 yard line. However, the Wildcat defense held strong with an interception by Matt Liu (20) on 4th and 21 to close out the victory for Libertyville.
Libertyville is at Waukegen next week on Friday, October 3rd.
