An in-depth look at the 2024 Lake County primary candidates

The 2024 Illinois Primaries are going to be held March 19. Local candidates listed will be presented on the ballot for Libertyville area residents. 

 

U.S. House of Representatives (10th Congressional District)

Democrat Brad Schneider (Incumbent)

    Bio

    • Incumbent Brad Schneider is the father of two boys, owned his own life insurance agency, a local businessman working in management consulting, an active Jewish Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Organization member, as well as a trustee of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and on the Waukegan Public Library advisory board.
  • Policy 
    • He advocates for creating an economy for all, pushing past partisan conflicts to find solutions. He supports protecting the Affordable Care Act, Social Security and Medicare. Lastly, he believes in a women’s right to choose, a healthy environment and full equality for the LGBTQ community.

Republican Jim Carris

    Bio

    • Jim Carris is the son of a Greek Immigrant, father to three children, local businessman with a legal background and serves on local organization boards including the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross of Chicago and Lurie Children’s Hospital.
  • Policy 
    • He advocates for school safety, ending negative social discourse in Washington, investing in infrastructure and schools, empowering police departments as well as addressing the mental health crisis. With years of business experience, he hopes he can bring new light to economic issues facing constituents (inflation, cost of living and lowering taxes).

 

Lake County State’s Attorney

Democrat (Incumbent) Eric Rinehart 

  • Bio
    • Eric Rinehart was born to teacher parents and is now a father to two boys. After law school he worked as a civil lawyer in Chicago and then joined the Lake County Public Defender’s Office in 2003. He started his own firm in 2009 and in 2020 he won the Lake County State’s Attorney’s position.
  • Policy
    • Rinehart believes in gun violence prevention initiatives and has also been an advocate for pushing for a Lake County Opioid Prevention Initiative. He believes in transparency and focusing on violent crime prevention. He wants to amplify the voices of the victims and he’s a proponent and supporter of the IL Safety Act.

Republican Mary Cole

      Bio 

      • Mary Cole was born and raised in Deerfield to a Thailandese immigrant mother who fled communism and a father who is a resident of Lake County. She worked as a paralegal to Lake County judges and then as a public defender after graduating law school. She was sworn in as an assistant State’s Attorney under both the Nerheim and Rinehart Administration, but departed in 2021. She’s a practicing attorney in a private law firm in Gurnee.
    • Policy 
      • She has become an advocate for victims of domestic violence, as she was once a victim herself. Mary supports law enforcement and bringing back law and order to the area. Most importantly, she wants to remove politics from the State’s Attorney’s Office and work with community leaders, non-profits, and faith-based groups to ensure a safer community. She stands against the recent legislation in IL called the Safety Act and hopes to curb gang violence.

Democrat Jennifer Banek (Incumbent) 

          • Bio
            • Incumbent Jennifer Banek is a mother, former trustee to Cook Memorial Public Library District, registered nurse anesthesiologist since 2009, and a member of American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology Board of Directors and a past president of the Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthesiology
          • Policy 
            • Banek hopes to continue to work on updating equipment across county to ensure timely patient care, fiscal responsibility, targeting crisis of opioid related deaths, and partnering with organizations to organizes the process of organ donations.

Republican Mark A. Symonds

    • Bio 
      • Mary Symonds is father to 5 children and lived above his family-run funeral home as a child. He has now been the director of a local funeral home in Lake County for 30 years.
    • Policy 
      • He believes in fiscal responsibility and treating every resource with respect, advocating for safe and informed communities to prevent unnatural deaths (addiction, equal access education and public health) and lastly, ensuring timely and accurate death investigations.

Ill. Senate (31st Legislative District)

Democrat Mary Edly-Allen (Incumbent)

Mary Edly-Allen is running for re-election for the Illinois Senate. She is concerned with issues like public safety, infrastructure, local governments and early childhood education.

Democrat Maria Peterson

Maria Peterson is running for the 52nd district representative.

She is fighting for women’s healthcare, reproductive rights, gun safety and protecting schools and libraries.

Republican Marty McLaughlin (Incumbent)

Martin McLaughlin is running for re-election for the 52nd district representative. McLaughlin is concerned with protecting children’s rights and protecting small businesses and taxpayers.

Laura Faver Dias is running for re-election for the 62nd district representative in the General Assembly. Dias is campaigning for better education for children and better resources for senior citizens.

Daniel Didech is running for re-election for the 62nd district representative in the General Assembly. He prioritizes gun rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, education and women’s choice.
