Guidance from a Graduating Senior

I want to start by saying that I loved high school. I loved going to football games, I loved meeting new people, I loved being a member of Advocats, I loved going to the plays. I loved being a part of LHS. I understand that everyone doesn’t feel that way; some people hate high school and that is okay. But we’re all stuck here for four years, so my advice is to make the most of it.

Get involved in that club that you don’t know anyone else in. Eat with new people in the cafeteria. Go to prom (with or without a date). Sign up for a theater class or wood shop. The way to enjoy LHS the most is to step outside of your comfort zone and get involved. Libertyville has so many different clubs and activities to offer its students — take advantage of them.

High school is a great time to learn more about yourself. Don’t get me wrong, I still have a lot to learn, but I’ve come a long way since middle school (which, if we’re all being honest, was the worst). The best way to discover what you like and don’t like is to try new things; life’s all about trial and error. If you don’t end up liking something, that is okay. At least you gave it a chance.

Don’t stress too much — try to relax and enjoy your time at LHS. One bad test is not going to prevent you from getting into the college of your dreams. When you’re stressing out about school or friend drama, take a step back and do something you enjoy. Go on a walk, talk to your mom, meet with friends. Do whatever you need to do to calm down and remember there are more important things than your grades. I’m not saying to blow off all your homework and never study, but keep a balanced life.

High school goes by too fast, so appreciate it now. I can’t believe I’m already a senior, writing a letter to underclassmen about high school. I don’t know how I’m going to leave my best friends in three months. I’m not sure if I’m ready to be a plane ride away from my family. But those are all problems for August; right now I’m celebrating my senior year. I’m congratulating myself on making it this far because it’s not always easy. But give it a chance, never give up on yourself and always try new things.
