Hi! I am Luke Ekdahl and this is my first year on the Drops of Ink staff! I am a junior and enjoy being a member of several clubs including Scholastic Bowl, Science Olympiad, Mu Alpha Theta, Guitar Club, Med Cats, and SnoCatz. I also like to play tennis, ski, and play guitar in a band with my friends.

Many schools across the nation continually fight for the funding of art departments. However, for LHS, the Fine Arts department receives a large budget that keeps the programs in place and running strong.

LHS guitar teacher Mr. David Ness and guitar students Thomas Power and Luke Christensen performed songs such as “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Johnny B. Goode” for Oak Grove students in the junior high cafeteria, where students enjoyed the performance and clapped their hands to the beat. Mr. Ness also talked with students about the blues as well as Jazz Appreciation Month. He discussed the many opportunities LHS offers for students who want to play guitar, such as the guitar classes, Guitar Club and the Jazz Band.

A Fine Day for Some Arts

Outside of the LHS activities and performances, Oak Grove students were able to visit stations such as steel drums, with members of the Calypso band Callaloo seen performing here. Other presentations were on Storytelling, Sword Choreography, Bruise Makeup and many other art-related festivities.

In the LHS 2D art station, Oak Grove students can be seen making watercolor monotypes.

Members of the LHS Dance III class , as well as other dancers, performed several dance routines and explained to Oak Grove students that, at LHS, they are able to participate in dance classes as well as out-of-school dance clubs, such as Orchesis.

LHS Theater members perform some presentational theater, a monologue, while the rest of the performers act as “mummies” in the story performed for Oak Grove students. Later, they discussed all of LHSs opportunities to participate in theater and acting.

In the junior high art room, students came to the LHS 3D Art station, where they designed and pressed their own buttons.

Also in the junior high cafeteria, members of the LHS Choir came to perform songs such as “September” and a medley of songs from the musical Jersey Boys. Additionally, they discussed with students about the many opportunities LHS has for singers, both curricular and extracurricular.

Over the course of this winter, LHS students have seen everything from whooping cough to the common cold, and more recently, the potential for the spread of mumps. The school nurses encourage students, as always, to wash their hands, cough into their elbows and maintain a high immune system through plenty of sleep, in order to prevent the spread of germs.

The Libertyville High School Class of 1918 graduated nearly 100 years ago, marking formation of the school in 1917. Now LHS will celebrate its 100th anniversary in a upcoming year long celebration.
