Starring: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning
Summary: Based off of Cherie Currie’s book, “Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway,” this movie gives viewers a look at the lives of the band members of the all-girls 1970’s rock band, “The Runaways,” focusing mainly on Cherie Currie herself (Dakota Fanning). Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart), an edgy rock-and-roll girl, meets producer Kim Fowley at a club in Los Angeles and introduces herself to him. He sees something in her and pairs her up with a drummer, Sandy West. They begin to practice together and add new members to their growing band. They then find Currie, whose look they love, and offer her a spot in the band as the lead vocalist. The plot follows “The Runaways” as it grows in popularity and becomes an internationally known name, then as it falls from the spotlight to slowly become an afterthought.
Pros: Fans of “The Runways” and Joan Jett will be blown away by the movie’s soundtrack. Also, the actresses were cast very well and did a good job portraying the characters. Their new roles have potential to change viewers’ minds about Dakota Fanning being a cute child star and Kristen Stewart being a teen vampire-lover.
Cons: With drugs, sex and alcohol, this movie is everything your mom told you not to do. Also, since the movie is mostly based off its soundtrack, there wasn’t much substance to the plot, and it didn’t hold interest very well. There were a lot of unnecessary scenes that trailed away from the original plot. Also, there many bad messages that definitely proved why this movie was rated R. Overall, the movie was a snooze.
