We all heard our LSTs warn us about the ever-growing threat of theft in our hallways. iPods, phones and the ever-elusive gym straps are being taken out of people’s lockers.

While this is a serious smudge on the stealer’s moral record, we also have to look in the mirror and see just who else is to blame for our things being stolen.

Us.

We really don’t have anyone else to blame but ourselves for not taking the time to lock our lockers. Sure, it takes an extra five seconds to open it--and heaven forbid we'd have to use a few extra brain cells to remember our locker combos--but we could all pull through these hardships and protect ourselves from theft.

It’s simple, really.

If we want to keep our things, we have to lock our lockers. It’s like how two plus two equals four. It makes sense. Lock the locker and no one can get in.

One more thing that probably is a key factor in theft: when we share our locker combinations with the entire world. It is not appropriate information for Facebook. Not a good idea. At all. Even as a prank, it’s probably not as funny to the owner of the locker as we think it is. Plus, most of us probably don’t have enough money to repay the person who lost their belongings. It's expensive to replace an iPod or a phone. And with each text book price reaching up to eighty dollars, the expenses really add up quickly.

Interestingly enough, we still complain about losing our things to theft. We sit through countless lectures telling us to do this one simple thing. How many more times will we have to listen?

So people, really…

Just lock your lockers.
