Haley Becker, a freshman, is jumping her way through record books on the varsity track team.
The previous high jump record was 5’3” and was set by Liz Proctor in 2001. Becker cleared 5’5” at a meet against Warren and Zion Benton on April 12, which broke her personal record by three inches.
“It feels amazing. I had no idea I was capable of that so early in the season. I hope to break the record again since I still have another three years to go,” Becker said.
As the second highest point scorer on varsity, Haley has undoubtedly proven her strengths to her coaches and other teammates.
“No one had even come close to the old record, which stood for about ten years before Haley’s performance this year. Her breaking the record is a feat in itself, and for her to do it as a freshman is absolutely amazing,” coach Tom Bizosky said.
Becker has been running track since the sixth grade, but only started participating in the high jump competition two years ago.
“I like how I can jump so high and not land on my feet and not hurt myself. Mostly, I like jumping into the mat. My first meet, the only reason I did it was because it looked fun to jump into the pit,” Becker said.
In addition to fellow track members, Becker also has a solid support system at home. Her twin sister also participates in sports, and they always make an effort to watch and support each other at sporting events.
“My family is great with supporting each other. My parents have not missed more than two of our games/meets this year, and my grandparents have also go to all of our games and meets. However, my parents definitely encourage me the most. They aren’t like those crazy parents who force their kids to do sports, but they make sure I try my best in the sports that I’m in,” Becker said.
Becker’s twin sister, Megan, is also a three sport athlete in cross country, basketball and track.
Although Becker plans on remaining a three sport athlete all throughout high school, she does not have
any definite aspirations for life after graduation.
“I have not thought of any of that stuff yet, but I still have some time to think about it,” she said.
After an outstanding season, Becker placed 3rd at Sectionals with a 5’1” jump. However, to qualify for state a jumper must make a 5’3” or place in the top two.
With another three years ahead of her, Becker is sure to be at the top in no time.
