Libertyville High School will help the neighboring communities with its annual canned food and senior coat drives.

Until Nov. 23, students can donate canned goods, other non-perishables and toiletries in collection boxes at the main security desk and in their third period classes. Within the third period classes, a contest will be held. The class with the highest average of goods donated per student will win gift cards to be used for their WISH project.

However, anyone can donate outside of the classroom, including community members. They will be receiving bags with letters to place their donations in. On Nov. 19, their donations should be placed at their front door, and they will be picked up by Student Council.

Donations this year for the canned food drive will be going to Libertyville Township Food Pantry. The estimated guess of donations that came in the previous years was in the thousands. The many donations expected to come in this year are going to be picked up on Nov. 23.

“Student Council and any other students who want to participate in the food chain, that’s where we move all the food into the truck, can come to the teacher cafeteria and we will start at about 7:00 a.m. and we will start packing the truck with all the boxes of food,” said Ms. Jennifer Paul, the student activities coordinator.  “It is a very fulfilling day.”

From Oct. 17-Nov. 4, the senior class held a coat drive. Students, staff, and the community could donate new or gently used winter coats of all sizes. Donations were made in drop boxes in the LSTs, main foyer, and the Studio Theatre entrance.

The coats will be going to Holy Family Food Pantry, part of Most Blessed Trinity Santisima Trinidad in Waukegan.  In past years, about 100 or so coats were donated, but this year the senior class is hoping for more coats.
