Advisor: Ms. Flood
Purpose: To promote the celebration, awareness and advocacy of issues surrounding students of different sexual orientations and gender identities.
History: Two students approached Ms. Flood ten years ago and together they founded the club.
What they do: Team-building activities, creation of advocacy and awareness opportunities within LHS and the Libertyville community, and discussion of current events related to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. Out-of-school activities include AIDS benefits, movie nights and GLBT organization activities.
When they meet: Tuesdays after school.
Who should join: Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning teens as well as their heterosexual supporters.
Positives: GSA is an open community where a broad spectrum of issues, all the way from political to personal, can be discussed freely. GSA is a safe, judgment-free club for people of all sexual orientations.
Member opinions:
“It’s really cool. It’s a place where you can go and be yourself and be safe and talk about things that are important to you and to the community--and make a difference,” one junior member said.
"It’s awesome, and I think everyone should join, because it really is for everybody,” one freshman member said.
